Going into uni I knew I had to make the most of it, which is why I set out to create an unforgettable experience that I can fondly revisit in the future. During o-week I was instantly met with a sea of club stalls. Truth be told, it was quite overwhelming, especially to a newcomer like me. However, I wanted my year to be packed with exciting events and new friends and I knew the best way to do this would be through joining the clubs. I narrowed down my interests and engaged with committee on clubs that resonated with me. I quickly joined several clubs that I knew I would enjoy which was the best decision I could’ve made as a first year university student.
With an impressive array of over 200 diverse clubs, spanning faculties, social, sport, cultural, musical, art and special interest clubs for many niches, no matter your field of study or personal interest, you’re bound to discover a club that you will love. Each course has their own student society which hosts a range of engaging events, whether that be social gatherings or professional networking events. As a commerce student, the first club I joined was the commerce student society. I went to their camp, bar nights, boat cruise, ball and many other events. By placing myself in such relaxed environments where everyone was looking to make friends, I was able to meet some of my best friends at uni. These events also allow you to get familiar with the people in your cohort and pushes you to try new things through the people that you connect with. Through this, I was inspired to go for committee with SAMM, which has opened up many opportunities and allowed me to meet people who are on similar paths as me.
As an avid skier since I was a child, my friends and I decided to go on a ski trip to Mt Hotham with the Melbourne University Ski Team (MUSKI). Our trip left us with so many great memories. The people, the atmosphere and the activities were all so fun and unique, which really elevated my usual trips to the snow. It helped me take a much-needed break from the usual busy university life and indulge in something that I really enjoy. I know most of you have special interests and by joining a community of people that love it just as much as you, it helps you feel a sense of belonging. This is invaluable especially in a place where maintaining friendships demands a proactive effort, unlike the familiarity of seeing the same faces every day in high school.
So, take that initiative, join that club you have been eyeing, it has the potential to transform your whole uni life for the better. Everyone in these clubs is there to enjoy the same things as you and meet interesting people along the way. Don’t make university a chore, but rather one of the best experiences of your life. There is no doubt that in joining a couple clubs you will in turn gain a very rewarding university life that you will talk about for many years to come!
