Is Staying at College Worth It?

That magical time when you’re officially an adult (sort of) but still get to dodge the full-on responsibilities of the real world—that is college. Whether you're a fresher or in your third year, living the college life is an experience like no other. Let’s be clear though, college in Australia is a bit different from the wild, frat-filled scenes you might see in American movies (though let’s be real, the party scene can still get pretty crazy).

But just so you know when I say college, I'm not talking about uni.

Living in a residential college offers the chance to build lifelong friendships, dive into sports or activities, build that college spirit, and most importantly, find that sense of belonging in the vastness of university life. It's your home away from home. But, just like anything, staying at college has its ups and downs. After living in one for a year and having friends across the different Unimelb colleges (there are 10 different ones, btw, so you can definitely take your pick), I’m here to give you the rundown on the best and worst parts of college. Whether you're weighing your options or just curious, let’s dive into the real deal of college life!

The Pros: Why College is amazing

1. Friends on speed dial

With an endless amount of people around you, finding your group of friends will never be a struggle. Whether it’s a connection to home or someone from the other side of the world, you’re never far from a friendly face. Everyone is incredibly approachable, and with a mixture of year groups, getting advice or help with uni is as easy as asking.

2. You rarely get bored

Boredom? Nahhhh. You're never short of things to do in college, whether it be playing sports, hanging out, late-night food runs, studying, partying—the list goes on. There is always something happening, which can be a blessing and a curse.

3. College spirit

Another super fun aspect of college is the ability to participate in the multi-college events. Whether you’re competing in a sport, showing off your dance moves, jamming out in a music competition, or just cheering on your friends from the sidelines, you’ll find yourself swept up in the excitement. These events are more than just friendly rivalry; they’re another way to bond with your mates. It's a sense of community that is hard to find anywhere else, and before you know it, you’re decked out in college merch, screaming your college name with pride.

4. You don’t need to cook

The cafeteria is your new kitchen. Now, let's get it straight—the food may not be Michelin-star or yummy all the time (obviously, personal preferences and tastes apply). But it’s the ability to not have to cook or do the dishes that can be a major relief; all you need to do is swipe your card, and bam… food.

5. Easy living

Apartment hunting in Melbourne can be the biggest pain. College allows you to push that off for a term, a year, or maybe your whole uni experience. No stressing over rent, utilities, or finding a place near campus. Just roll out of bed, and you’re practically in class.

The Cons: the 😬 moments

1. Your wallet is gonna cry

Let's not sugarcoat it, it is hella expensive to stay at college. The room and board, meal plans, miscellaneous fees, and your own personal expenses—the costs add up too quickly. This can be a major factor for many; however, many colleges do have numerous scholarships that can take some of the cost factor away (which I guess is technically a pro if you get one). So yes, college is convenient, but it's definitely not bank-account friendly.

2. Hella overwhelming

With so much going on, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. The constant load of activities can be draining, and the pressure to always participate or show face can be stressful for many. It can be hard to find peace in a college, especially since you don’t want to be cooped up in your small room all day.

3. FOMO

That being said, FOMO is too real. From missing out on something that your friends don’t stop raving about to seeing half your college leave for an event while you're grinding that assignment, the fear of missing out won’t stop. But remember, it’s okay to say no, and your grades will probably thank you.

4. It's always noisy

The noise doesn’t stop. From hearing half your college come home at 2 a.m. from the club, people in the hallways, or noisy neighbours blasting music at all hours or ;), college does not shut up. You get used to it, but it can be a real pain in the ass.

So is it worth it?

Hell yeah it is. Despite the cons, especially the big one of cost, it is a wild, amazing and frustrating time that will leave you with too many funny and traumatic memories.
