Getting Back into the Swing of Things Post-Holidays

The second half of the year is well and truly upon us (seriously how is it August??) and Semester 2 has begun at full steam ahead. Although the break is over, if you’re anything like me, easing back into the uni grind hasn’t got off to the most productive start, but that's okay! We’re here to turn that around.

It’s always a struggle to get your mojo back after a bit of time off and trust me in saying that you’re not the only one! The first step is recognising your patterns with productivity and motivation…or lack thereof – so if you’re here… congrats! You’re halfway there. Now it’s time to change those habits and redirect your semester back on the right path.

Here are some ideas to help you get the ball rolling this semester…

GO OVER YOUR ROTUINE:

Adjusting to your new semester timetable can be hard, but I love using my diary and desk calendar to write out everything I have each week as well as when I’m going to slot in time for online lectures, making notes, doing quizzes etc. Being able to visually see my routine for the week already makes me feel so much more organised and motivated to start working.

SET OUT YOUR DAY IN TIME BLOCKS:

I find that when I plan my day out by the hour is when I get the most done (even if I don’t end up doing every single thing I wrote down). I follow this amazing account on Instagram called @dearangelstudy who have so many example study schedules as well as tips and motivation which I love. Setting out exactly when I’m going to do different tasks makes everything seem so much more achievable compared to a lengthy to-do list.

START WITH ONE TASK:

On those days where you really don’t feel like doing anything, try do at least one small thing to not only make yourself feel good, but to hopefully gather up some motivation. I read somewhere that motivation doesn’t just appear, you need to create it and once you do, it will be so much easier to keep going. Start with something easy and once you’re on a roll you’ll be ticking off your tasks in no time!

SWITCH UP YOUR STUDY SPACE:

Finding a new place to study can be so motivating and usually tends to get me in the zone. I have been loving the top floor of the Giblin Library at the moment, as well as the student lounges in Levels 1,2 and 3 of The Spot and Level 4 of the Student Pavilion (near Stop 1).

GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK WHEN YOU NEED IT:

Don’t forget to give yourself regular breaks – its only Week 2 and with the mid-sem break being scheduled so late in the semester (yep – NINE straight weeks of uni) you want to avoid burnout at all costs. Make sure you make time for yourself to chill and reset each week without losing your routine – aka don’t spend ALL night scrolling on TikTok 😊

Hopefully this has helped you find some ways to get yourself motivated! Now go do that thing at the top of your to-do list :)))
